The Fairlo story began thirty years ago with the family of our founders Jimmy and Shamon fleeing political turmoil and ending up in Sweden. Struggling to give her children all that they desired, Jimmy and Shamon’s mother took a small unsecured loan. It seemed like a good deal but it quickly turned sour as the loan increased in size in spite of the continuous payments. Much later, having grown up, the two brothers revisited this incident and it became the spark that ignited the Fairlo vision. The fact that a trusted bank took predatory advantage of their family, when they were the most vulnerable, became the starting point of a quest to create a fair credit service. Since the start about six years ago, we’ve been working tirelessly to live up to the vision of an honest and easy-to-understand credit service. Without toxic terms, sneaky fine print, and nasty surprises.

What you’ll do

As a Cloud / Senior Backend Engineer at Fairlo, you will play a central role in the development and maintenance of our core technology. Your work will focus on building, maintaining, and optimizing backend services and APIs, with a strong emphasis on Node.js. You’ll also design, implement, and manage scalable, secure, and reliable AWS architectures using tools like CloudFormation, Terraform, SAM, or CDK.

In addition to backend development, you’ll take responsibility for ensuring the platform performs optimally, addressing security requirements, and scaling the system as we grow. Your role will involve full lifecycle development, meaning you’ll engage in everything from gathering requirements and designing solutions to coding, testing, and deployment.

Collaboration will be key as you work closely with team members across engineering, product, and design to deliver innovative financial services that make a real-world impact. You’ll also focus on regularly reviewing and updating infrastructure, dependencies, and codebases to keep our technology modern, robust, and future-ready.

In this role, you’ll split your focus between backend development and building robust infrastructure on AWS. You’ll be expected to take ownership of ensuring the platform is secure, scalable, and reliable. This includes proactively establishing and maintaining a strong security posture, identifying opportunities for upgrades and optimizations, and driving continuous improvements.

We embrace a startup mindset, where taking ownership and wearing multiple hats is encouraged. Your role will be shaped not just by our needs, but by your interests and imagination.

Requirements

We’re looking for a senior, driven backend or full-stack engineer with strong programming and architectural skills, coupled with a keen eye for performance, reliability, and scalability. You should have experience in:

• Backend Development, building, maintaining, and optimizing backend services using modern frameworks like Node.js (preferred), .NET Core, or Java.
• Cloud Architecture, designing and implementing scalable, reliable, and secure AWS architectures.
• Infrastructure as code, developing and managing infrastructure using tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, AWS SAM, or CDK.
• Proactive platform management, taking the responsibility to establish and maintain a secure, scalable, and reliable platform. This includes proactively identifying and implementing new services or upgrades, addressing security needs, and ensuring overall system performance.
• Collaboration, working across teams to gather requirements, design solutions, and deliver high-quality results.
• Relational databases, strong knowledge and hands-on experience with relational databases as PostgreSQL.
